Doing Some Cardio (X) and Random Ab-Rippers

Trying to get back into P90X.

Been having trouble getting motivated for hour-long workouts with Tony. Been running a lot instead -- super nice outside here now and I usually P90X inside.

P90X Barefoot or Shoes?

I love doing P90X workouts, and I do some of them barefoot. Some of these workouts I am taking shoes off to do Ab Ripper which I much prefer barefoot.

Here is my breakdown.

Shoes
  • Plyo-X
  • Legs & Back
  • Kenpo-X
  • Back & Biceps
  • Chest, Shoulders & Triceps

No Shoes / Barefoot
  • Ab Ripper
  • Chest & Back
  • Shoulders & Arms
  • Yoga-X
  • Stretch-X
  • Cardio-X

Anyone have any thoughts?

Recovery Drink

I have been using the P90X recovery drink but have decided to try another Recovery Drink product.

I have looked at reviews on Amazon, Recovery Drink Comparison Charts and the ingredients/nutritional information on both EnduroxR4 and the P90X Recovery Drink.

In the end, I am going to just combine these two products, which I ordered off Amazon. I would totally continue to use P90X Recovery Drink if it was sold on Amazon.

Day #17 : Stretch-X

Traveling tomorrow and I did not do Yoga-X today, just Stretch-X

Day #16: Shoulds & Arms

Good bye Shoulders & Arms, we will not see your awesome face for 6 more weeks.

I had my best ever Ab Ripper today -- ever single rep, on time and on pace. I'm still feeling it today.

Day #15: Plyometrics X

Finished Plyo-X today, hardcore. Did Jump-Knee-Tucks at my own pace and hit 190 BPM (way high!) on both sets. Pushed myself almost to the brink.

Allison had a blister on her foot (cute shoes make that girl do crazy things!) but she still kept up barefoot. Pretty impressive, considering this is a tough working in springy trainers.

Day #14: Chest & Back + Ab Ripper

Brutal Chest&Back today. Not enough food eaten I think, and Kenpo-X really took it out of me.

I did do almost every rep (second wind?) in Ab-Ripper though, missing only a few Oblique V-Ups and three reps in Hip-Rock-N-Raise that I just could not do in time.

Chest & Back should be done with Push-Up bars, if not to make it more of a workout (extra range of motion) but to save your wrists. I have a bunch of wrist problems from a nasty car accident and typing too much, so I suggest something like these:

Day #13: Kepo-X

I am doing a "double-double" (as Tony would say) today with Kenpo-X and Chest&Back + Ab Ripper.

I used my Nike Triax C8 Heart Rate Monitor - Black/Blue - SM0017-044 for the first time today. It was actually a lot more comfortable than I thought it would be, the strap and all. I was pushing 160-190 BMP for most of Kenpo-X, but I really throw myself into that one and wear weighed gloves to drive up the intensity.

Proof positive that Kenpo-X is a great workout if you put your heart into it :)

Good stuff. I will post again after C&B.

Day #12: Yoga-X

All the way to the end! Yoga Bella Seven...RULES. I love it. You need to Yoga. It will increase
your fitness on every level.

Key to Yoga-X is the mat. You need a good one.

Manduka BlackMatPRO are AMAZING. Invincible, sticky, hypoallergenic. Heavy as hell though, but who carries these things around on a hike? not me. They make a travel version that is lighter but who wants that.

Get the long version, the one above. The shorter one is for people who are like 5'6" or something.

Day #11: Legs & Back

I love Legs & Back. I will be honest, this is the my favorite workout. Major muscle blaster. Throw in Ab Ripper (go hard!) and it is a full-body and then some workout.

First week I put up 53 chin/pull ups. Today, 68 total. I am on my way back to a respectable 120, but this time I am going all on time, no extra pauses to eek out the extra reps!

All my love for the door mounted pull-up bars, if your doors are wide enough.

Day #10: Shoulders & Arms

Shoulders and Arms and Ab-Ripper.

Sunday, January 18, 2009

Day #9: Plyo-X

Plyo-X is a hard workout, even if you modify and just try to keep up. My workout partner today borked about 30 minutes in, just ran out of energy and her blood sugar dropped.

If you hit that wall during Plyo-X, do NOT push yourself past it. You will only get sick. The best thing to do if you can't finish is to stop, drink fluids and come back strong the next day.

Day #8: Chest & Back + Ab Ripper

Tore this one up today.

Friday Skip

It is Friday and we skipped today to go have fun.

Day #7: Stretch-X

Everyone loves this DVD.

Hang in for the stretch.

Day #6: Kenpo-X

I did Kenpo-X today with my weight gloves. Allison was not too sure about this workout and I remember how I felt the first few times I did it.

It is a lot of moves and until you get good at them and work up your intensity level, Kenpo does not really give you the type of workout that something like Plyometrics does -- not even close.

Day #5: Legs & Back + Ab Ripper

We made it through our first legs and back workout today, with an Ab Ripper to boot!

I got in a total of 53 pull-up and chin-ups, all on P90X's allotted time. That is a big decrease from before, when I was doing these workouts solo. I was putting up over 100 pull-up and chin-ups in a single workout, but I was also taking extra time for almost every set to rest between my mini-sets of 4, 5 or 6 x-ups.

Sunday, January 11, 2009

Day #4: Some Yoga-X

Yoga-X is one of my favorite workouts -- but only if I have the time to do it and not feel rushed or distracted. Everyone had homework today so it was not a great Yoga-X day and we only complete the first 40 minutes or so.

We did not count this as a skip day as we both had lots of physical activity early in the day and it was late.

I love (LOVE) Yoga-X, however, I need to make sure that this workout day in particular has lots of time scheduled for the P90X.

I think part of it is how relaxing I find Yoga-X to be and my mind tends to wander more than when I am jumping from press to curl and back again (like in Shoulders&Arms.)

Day #3: Shoulders & Arms + Ab Ripper

Shoulders and Arms is one of my favorite workouts, honestly.

We're using the BowFlex SelectTech (she has the 220 and I have the 552.) I am really glad that I upgraded to the 552 because when I was using the 220 (like, for example Day #17) I was maxing out all my weights at 20 pounds, which was not working.

Now I am able to use 22.5, 25 and 30 pounds which really works for me now.

Ab Ripper destroyed us both. And we do not have any chairs so chair dips were hard.

Funny -- I have a pull-up / chin-up bar but no chairs. I did not get my run in because I had a nasty issue crop up at work (always on the weekend, right?)

Skip Day #1 : Shoulders & Arms

We are skipping our workouts today. It is Friday and we want to go out with our friends.

It is disappointing but we will make up for it tomorrow. I am planning a double -- Shoulders&Arms + Ab Ripper in the morning and an 8 mile run in the evening.

That might make up for a little bit of today.

Day #2 : Plyo-X

I had forgotten just how brutal (brutally awesome that is) Plyo-X is.

I am back to drinking the P90X Recovery Drink.

Allison and I both struggled today but it was good. We were laughing and having fun, which can be hard when your struggling to stand up and covered in perspiration.

Another Option

Traveling, have no equipment or not quite ready for P90X? Give Craig Ballantyne’s challenging, effective, and free(!) original 4-Week Turbulence Training program a try.

Aftermath of Day #1

Everyone was a a lot hungry and little sore this morning, but we are in high spirits.

P90X works, it really really works.

Day #1 (Third Time == Charm) : Chest & Back + Ab Ripper

This is the third time I have done Day #1 of P90X.

This is the first time for my girlfriend who has pledged to complete the program with me, in preparation for a (sorta) surprise vacation for her spring break.
